WalletHub recently ranked 2023’s best colleges and universities based on factors such as affordability, admission rates, safety and post-attendance median salary. Of more than 900 campuses across the country, three colleges in and around the Queen City made the list: Davidson College, Queens University of Charlotte and Catawba College.
The full list of North Carolina colleges and universities is below:
- Duke University
- UNC-Chapel Hill
- Davidson College
- NC State University
- Meredith College
- Queens University of Charlotte
- Salem College
- Elon University
- Catawba College
Davidson, a small school just north of Charlotte, claims NBA star Steph Curry among its alumni. Thanks to its admission rate, graduation rate, post-attendance median salary and student-faculty ratio, Davidson ranked third on the list overall. In 2007, Davidson became the first liberal arts college in the country to exclude student loans from their financial aid packages. It also eliminated the need for admissions exams like the SAT and ACT in April of 2022.
Queens University took the seventh spot on the list. It is located just outside of Charlotte’s Uptown (what locals refer to as the downtown area) in the Myers Park neighborhood. Queens has recently made headlines for hosting its first-ever NCAA Division I sporting event and for its instructor Ada Limón becoming the 24th US Poet Laureate.
Finally, Catawba College, a private, coed liberal arts college in historic Salisbury, ranked tenth on the list. It strives to inspire students to make lasting positive change in the world with a focus on service through educational outreach and volunteer programs.
