Summer is here and the world is beginning to open – we could not be more excited! There is no better time to make up for all the delayed travel plans from 2020 than this summer. Charlotte is a perfect year-round city, but not just because of the beautiful weather and plethora of things to do. In fact, Charlotte’s proximity to mountains, lakes, and beaches makes it an idyllic place to live for those that want it all.
For those who are not quite ready to fly again, we asked our agents for their top travel destinations that are a drivable distance from the Queen City. Check out their best summer getaways responses below!
Grayson Highlands State Park
“We love hiking at this park just over the state line in Virginia. The wide-open spaces, layered and long views, beautiful topography, and trails are all breathtaking. The Park turns magical when you come across the wild ponies along the trails.” – Mai-Lis Bahr, REALTOR®/Broker
Ocean Isle Beach
“My family has been going to Ocean Isle since the 50’s and our house was one of the first rebuilt on the island after Hurricane Hazel. The island has changed a lot over my 27 years but the thing that remains is the family friendly vibe! Mini golf and ice-cream, a new park and Drift coffee… there are just enough amenities to keep you feeling satisfied without so many attractions/ distractions that you forget the point of a vacation is to unwind from a schedule and a car!
Ocean isle has a simple charm that is hard to beat. While Kiawah and Figure 8 have got luxury covered and it’s hard to beat the year-round livability and sheer beauty of Ocean Isle for a quick family-friendly summer excursion.” – Hunter Rogers, REALTOR®/Broker
Lake Lure and Pinehurst
“Both locations are just two hours away! Lake Lure is the perfect mountain escape and Pinehurst is the golf mecca of our country, featuring more than 40 golf courses in Moore County…so much history!” – Suzanne Coddington, REALTOR®/Broker
Bald Head Island
“My favorite summer getaway within a 4-hour drive of Charlotte has to be Bald Head Island! Accessible from the Southport via a short ferry ride, this island makes you feel like you are on vacation in a tropical paradise. The island is a natural preserve with limited home development, so nature is all around. Inter-Island transportation is only via golf carts. You can walk miles on the beach and not see a soul. Plus, the island is dog-friendly, so you don’t have to leave your pooch behind. Be sure to bring your golf clubs and tennis rackets as the BHI Club offers many club activities. If you get tired of going to the beautiful beaches, you can always shop or eat out at one of the island favorite restaurants in the marina. This is a great family get-away to unwind and unplug. Highly recommend!!!” – Sherry George, REALTOR®/Broker
“My favorite summer getaway would be Wrightsville Beach. We love to stay at the Blockade Runner. Wrightsville has great beaches, waterfront restaurants, and the inlet is great for paddleboarding. The Blockade Runner is a fabulous boutique hotel on the beach.” – Ruth Moniz, REALTOR®/Broker
