The show is a retrospective featuring more than 75 amazing works in glass from 1969-2009. This show will also be exhibited April 9-May 15 at the Green Hill Center for NC Art.

Richard Ritter, born in Detroit, Michigan in 1940, studied to be an artist and became an illustrator for an advertising firm. After 5 years as an illustrator, he decided to take a class in metalworking. It was his desire to incorporate glass elements into his pewter castings that ultimately led him to glassblowing.

In 1971, Richard enrolled in a summer session at the Penland School of Crafts in Mitchell County taught by Mark Peiser. It was a later session that same summer with fellow glass artist Richard Marquis that proved to be pivotal. Marquis had recently spent a year in Murano. His course gave instruction on working with glass using a highly complex version of the murrini process. A process that was first developed by the Phoenicians and early Romans, a murrini is a cross cut slice made of glass threads or canes that convey a design or color pattern.

Richard Ritter taught classes back in Michigan as well as became one of Penland School's first artists in residence. In 1980, he and his wife, Jan Williams, permanently settled in Bakersville, near the school.

What separates Richard from many glass artists working in the field today is that he makes all his glass- the clear or opalescent components to the color rods that compose the murrini slices. Developing the chemical compositions to achieve a certain color as well as knowing which colors can and will combine witout an adverse reaction is slowly becoming a lost art.

His compositions are known by glass collectors and institutions throughout
the world. Flowers, faces even insects such as dragonflies and ladybugs are made from countless hours of painstaking work. Drawing a design, arranging the color rods, melting, stretching, slicing and then working with hot glass to incorporate all the elements into larger highly complex works are just the basic steps in his process. Many fellow artists as well as other respected authorities consider him to be one of the most highly skilled artists working in the medium.

Richard is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the North Carolina Arts Council. His work has been exhibited internationally and is represented in public and private collections including the Corning Museum of Arts and Design the White House permanent craft collection, the Mint Museum of Craft + Design, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Additional information and images available: www.ritterglass.com, www.habatatglass.com

Ed Jones
Realtor/Broker
D: 704.602.6864
ejones@dickensmitchener.com

Dickens-Mitchener Welcomes Marcia Teal

Dickens-Mitchener is proud to announce that Marcia Teal has joined its team as Sales Manager of the Eastover office effective immediately. It's easy to feel a bit glum about how much value your current home has probably lost. But there may be more to gain in today's market than to lose. I am continually surprised by the calls I get from past clients. It usually goes something like this "Hey, Shelly. We want you to come talk to us about selling our house... well, we still love our house, but we were just thinking that if we could sell it, we could finally make the move to <fill in the blank> that we've always wanted to make. We've been online looking, and we can actually afford to get a <house, neighborhood, school district, etc> that we just couldn't afford before."

It's all about OPPORTUNITY. So- what are the highlights here?
1.) If you can come to terms with the inevitable lower sale price on your current home, you can make a move UP to a home where you can stay long term.
2.) There is momentum brewing out there- buyers are looking online, gauging the market even before reaching out to their REALTORS
3.) When you do list, make sure your online presence has "WOW" so those buyers can get excited about what they see, and so it will move them to ACTION.
4.) LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE! Low interest rates, low sale prices, and lots of inventory make this the strongest buyer's market in a long time.

Take a look at your own life, your current home, your future goals. If you have always thought that your "forever home" is different from the home you live in now, this might be a good time to make that move. And of course, call your Dickens-Mitchener agent today to help you take advantage of the OPPORTUNITIES on your horizon!

Shelly J. For years, we have all anticipated the opening of the new building designed by renowned architect Mario Botta, admiring its design while under construction on South Tryon Street. The Bechtler Museum puts Charlotte on the same cultural map from we where we find other great museums in the United States, Europe, or elsewhere. As Charlotteans, we share in the enjoyment of this major addition to our cultural menu for visual arts. As realtors, we can point to the Bechtler as an example how the Queen City has reached world class status as a cultural center and as a destination for arts.

Fitz Lee
Broker/Realtor
D: 704.602.4263
flee@dickensmitchener.com

Lessons Learned from a 7 Year Old

I recently made the commitment to do a 100 mile(century) bike road in Lake Tahoe in June 2010 to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through Team in Training. The goals is for me to raise $4300 by the middle of May. I made the decision to do it because I had to "larger than life" people in my immediate family fall ill in 2009. I have always participated in sporting events and love to cycle so it seemed a perfect match and a great way for me to give back. For the first time in my 41 years, I could say I was doing something significant and important that would make a difference in a life or death situation. I decided it was time to have a conversation about it with 7 year old stepson and let him in on what I was doing. He listened quietly and asked a couple of questions and then slowly walked into another room. I questioned whether or not I had done the right thing by talking to him about cancer at such a young age. He suddenly appeared from his bedroom with $2.00 in his hand and told me he wanted to give to my fundraiser. I was so touched. In our house, we have a board and he earns $0.25 for each good deed/chore he does. I started thinking about what that meant for him to give me his $2.00. It meant trying new foods he really did not want to try, feeding the dog a couple of times, cleaning his room and making an "A" on a weekly spelling test. He had worked hard to earn that $2.00 and had been saving it for a trip to Atlantis in April and now was insisting I take it for my fundraiser. On Sunday, he had a friend over and they were playing in his room. I heard the friend say repeatedly "This one...this one" and it went on and on. After about 30 minutes of listening to that, curiosity got the best of me and went into his room to see what in the world they were up to. His friend was going through all of his toys and they had made two stacks. One he was was to keep and one he said was to sell at a garage sale he wanted to raise money for my fundraiser. The same Power Rangers that had slept in his bed with him and comforted him through nightmares and bathed with him time after time were now in the "sell" stack. he was even making a price list and he was blissfully unaware of the current economic crisis because a marble cost $5.00 and a Star Wars bobble head was $10.00. His enthusiasm and desire to help me raise money for a good cause really put it in perspective for me that I needed to give this everything I can and 5am bike rides to train or "pounding the pavement" to raise the money is so insignificant because it was not only making a difference to someone stricken with a blood cancer, it was making a difference to my stepson!

More blogging to follow as my training gets underway. Click here to donate to my cause.

Cathy Speizman
Broker/Realtor
Dickens-Mitchener & Associates
704.258.1391
cspeizman@dickensmitchener.com

Selling Green

I am proud to announce that I just sold Charlotte's first LEED certified house! And even though I have an architectural background, and my husband has LEED designations himself, I was surprised by the technology used in this house to achieve the Platinum level status. I had the opportunity to learn about some wonderful high-tech features, and how some of these can be incorporated into any house- you don't have to be building new. For example, we have all heard of rain barrels to collect water for use in watering your garden. But did you know that faucets can be retro-fitted with a low-flow valve? The result is NOT a puny dribble of water, it is a robust stream mixed with air bubbles to give you the look and feel of regular water flow. And we all know to turn off lights that are not in use. But did you know that a home can have a "whole house" remote control lighting system? In this home, when the owners are walking out the door to leave, with the push of one button they can turn off all the lights in the house. They can also preset the lights to a dimmer level to save on energy use. This system is installed by changing out the light switches in your home for programmable ones- it does not require a rewiring of your whole home! I have tank less water heaters in my own home, and I love them. I am hearing more and more stories of homeowners making that change when their old tank burns out. And then we have our crawl spaces- which I suspect for most of us are the least favorite part of our own home. Did you know that a sealed crawl space is so clean, that even the daintiest of homeowners can crawl through without seeing bug or dirt? They also help insulate the living space and they can dramatically improve the air quality in a home.

I think these are truly exciting options, and I am so glad to see that homebuilders are beginning to use these innovations, and that home buyers are responding favorably! This home was built by Banister Homes, and I represented the buyers in the transaction. Dickens-Mitchener represents a variety of builders who incorporate green building technology into their homes in Charlotte. If this interests you, contact me, Shelly Rydell at srydell@dmahomes.com. I can help you find a green home in our area, or connect you with builders who can talk to you about renovating or building using green building ideas!

Shelly Rydell
Realtor/Broker
Accredited Buyer Representative
Dickens-Mitchener & Associates
704.649.6530-Cell

Time to Close in Charlotte, NC to use First Time Home Buyer Tax Credit

Congress passed new legislation to stimulate the U.S. housing market, while addressing the nation's economic situation, by extending the First-Time Home Buyer Tax Credit of up to $8,000 to first-time home buyers until April 30th, 2010. There is no doubt that the first time home buyer tax credit is great for people interested in communities in South Charlotte, NC, but there are a few things to know before you assume that you qualify for the full $8,000.

What qualifies for the first time home buyer's tax credit? Only a primary house qualifies. It does not matter if it is a single family home, duplex, townhome, condo, apartment, or co-op, if it is a primary residence it will apply whether you are looking at homes near Freedom Park, homes in Myers Park or or homes for sale in Cotswold.

What is new and improved with the extended and expanded tax credit? The tax credit is income restricted, an individual cannot make more than $125,000 annually and a couple cannot make more than $250,000 jointly. A home must be a primary residence and valued at $800,000 or less. Buyers must have a property under contract to purchase by April 30,2010, and the property must close by June 30,2010.

The tax credit is a real boon for first time home buyers and does not have to be repaid. If you qualify for the tax credit and have been considering purchasing a new home, there could not be a better time. Low interest rates, low home values and the first time home buyer tax credit all add up to the right time to call local Charlotte, NC expert Scott Pridemore. The passing of this extended, expanded tax credit is good news on the Real Estate front and is expected to be the last tax credit offered for a long time to come.

Scott A.Pridemore
Realtor/Broker
D: 704.602.4258
M:704.562.0792
spridemore@dickensmitchener.com

Sandwich Generation

The Pappas household in finding out first hand the definition of the "Sandwich" generation. We are into week 7 of taking care of my husband's mother as she recovers from knee replacement surgery. I would highly recommend Barron Homesley Orthopedic in Charlotte, NC. Their personal care and attention cannot be surpassed. We had Dr. Homesley's private number and were encouraged to call him whenever we had a question. My advice for anyone with aging parents is to plan ahead for illnesses and age related issues. Make strong relationships with doctors now if your parents live in your city or if not make plans to move closer if at all possible. Don't wait until an accident occurs or you get a call in the middle of the night. If they can't move closer to you make accommodations for them to have any necessary surgeries or hospital stays in your city not theirs. Long term care insurance is a good option to investigate. Assisted living facilities are not for everyone. Many have high monthly fees and several have run into financial difficulties during the recent downturn. Plan on spending quite a bit of time investigating options. Talk to your folks that are in similar situations and have knowledge of local facilities. Real Estate agents are excellent sources of information. Dickens-Mitchener has helped relocate with aging parents and knows the drill well. If we can help you deal with elder care issues let us know.

Catharine Pappas
Relocation Director
Dickens-Mitchener & Associates
M: 704.661.2402
cpappas@dickensmitchener.com

Do you Need to Fill your Freezer for the Holiday and Support Local Charities?

The Charlotte Observer has done a wonderful job over the past few weeks getting the word out about the great need of local charities in Mecklenburg County. Saturday, December 5th from 9:30 until 1:00 at Christ Church on Providence Road, area craftsmen, local caterers, church members and the folks from Common Grounds Market will gather at the annual Christ Church Bazaar to sell their wares to raise money for needy families. There will be everything from delicious home made soups, cakes and casseroles to handcrafted pottery, jewelry, Advent Wreaths and garlands for your front door. All proceeds will go directly back into our community. Fill your freezer, decorate your home for the holidays all while helping neighbors who are less fortunate. Dickens Mitchener agents will be there in full force helping you find the perfect gift for your teachers, neighbors, family and friends. Wow... what an event! The Author of The Soloist and Columnist for the Los Angeles Times Steve Lopez was on hand to tell the story of how he came to know and become such good friends with the "Soloist" himself Nathaniel Anthony Ayers. The Soloist is the true story of a lost dream, an unlikely friendship, second chances and the healing power of music. Who better to share The Urban Ministry's mission of serving than Mr. Lopez.

Mr. Lopez shared with us his serendipitous introduction to Mr. Ayers while walking the streets of Los Angeles one day and from a distance, being drawn to a man playing beautiful music on a violin. It just so happens, the music he heard was Beethoven's 3rd Symphony and the man was homeless and amazingly... the violin was missing 2 strings .

If you haven't read the book or seen the movie, but plan to, I won't give it away. I'll just say this. Plan to be inspired to reach out to another person in need this Holiday seasn.

As you may already be aware, The Urban Ministry Center is a phenomenal interfaith organization serving the poor and homeless with love and tangible help. Some of the incredible services they provide are including:

-Homeless to Homes: A supportive housing pilot program and Moore Place-Charlotte?s first permanent supportive housing facility (opening 2010)

-Innovative outreach programs including Street Soccer 945, Art Works 945, Community Gardening, Voices of Love Choir and Homeless helping Homeless.

-Lunch 365 Days per year

-Room in the Inn winter shelter program

-Restrooms, Showers, laundry, phones, mail drop, lockers and other essential services

-Counseling and referrals to food pantries, Social Security, Department of Social services and other area providers

-Healthcare services including nurse, podiatrist, physician referral, dentist and prescription assistance.

Watch this 60 Minutes excerpt, YouTube Video:

Watch this Video about the Urban Ministry Center:

Funding: A registered 501 © (3) The Urban Ministry Center relies solely on private contributions from individuals, congregations, corporations and foundations. Today's Charlotte Observer hinted that the new School Board may revisit the vote when they are seated in December. Just when we were all getting used to our current fate... which is at the moment a new home for Dilworth which will be a very strong school with a large base of committed parents. CMS has promised to work with these parents to make the school the best it can be and the excitement denotes that it will indeed happen. Eastover will be back to a reasonable number of students and will still have a strong parent base that made it the hottest ticket in town. A seasoned, experienced staff and a principle with a PhD doesn't hurt matters. All rising 5th graders have the option of staying. A preliminary poll appears to indicate that many of them will remain for their 6th and final year at the best little school in town that once again will be the littlest school in town. I will keep you updated as things develop.

Catharine Pappas
Former PTA President Eastover Elementary
M:704.661.2402
cpappas@dickensmitchener.com

Charlotte And A Scooter; The Perfect Combo

A Vespa in Charlotte is the perfect answer if you want to be environmentally responsible and learn to navigate the city's beautiful streets. Fresh weather, changing colorful leaves and mostly respectful drivers make November in Charlotte, NC a great month to scoot around the city. It is dreamy to ride through this town on a scooter and really see the city and the real estate while using no more gas than can be held in a Hummer's ashtray.

I live 2 miles south of SouthPark, and some of my friends may think that the six miles I drive to go to work is a long trip on a red Vespa but it really only takes me 15 minutes.

Every time, I plan a different route to go back and forth from the office and that is the best way to learn about the city and its neighborhoods. I have a camera in my red Vespa's satchel and I shoot all interesting properties and people that I see while buzzing around.

Next time you see me zooming around on my red Vespa and need a real estate agent, honk!! I can carry a passenger and MLS Sheets!

Michael Donati
Realtor/Broker
D: 704.602.4264
M: 704.641.0456
mdonati@dickensmitchener.com

Huge Price Reduction- 1338 Meadowood Lane

This spectacular home has been reduced by $470,000 to its current list price of $1,925,000. The weather was beautiful and the scenery was awesome as always. The speakers were very informative and the information we gathered was valuable. One speaker in particular really struck a cord with the audience. I enjoyed his message so much that I attended 2 of his sessions and recognized many of the same faces in the room back for seconds as well.

Jerry Teplitz, J.D., Ph.D spoke to us but he clearly demonstrated how negative thoughts and feelings have a dramatic impact on our physical well-being as well as our energy level and strength. We all know how a stress-filled day can drain us and how a day that, in his words, "makes our heart sing" energizes us. He also have us some very simple tools to combat negatively and change our focus with the goal of being able to live and work more successfully, create positively in the lives of others and even ward off the effects of some illnesses.

I left the seminar with the knowledge that I cannot always control what is going on around me but I can have more control over my reactions to the everyday stresses that we have in our lives. That one change in our thought process can ultimately create richer personal and business experience and give us renewed energy to accomplish anything we decide is important to us.

Paige Moody
Realtor/Broker
D: 704.602.4248
M:704.906.8291
pmoody@dickensmitchener.com

Local Companies Excel in Customer Service

The downturn in the economy does have a silver lining. I was just at Belk's department store at SouthPark Mall in Charlotte, NC because of a huge sale on housewares and linens, and I was overwhelmed with the customer service I received. The sales associate bent over backwards to help me find what I needed and even carried my bags to the car! I swung by Harper's to Go on the way home and realized that a salad had not made it. I called and they immediately jumped in a car and drove 7 miles to bring it to me. Over the past year, I have witnessed locally owned businesses working hard to keep customer loyalty. Gracious attitudes and smiling faces are not hard to find especially at Dickens-Mitchener where we call making sure clients receive what they need and expect the Dickens-Mitchener Way and we have been at it for over 18 years.

Vicky Mitchener
Broker/Owner
D: 704.602.4221
vmitchener@dickensmitchener.com

Have A Voice In Your Community- Vote Tuesday November 3

This Tuesday, November 3 we have the opportunity to have a voice in the decisions that directly affect our neighborhoods and city. A CMS staff proposal to relieve crowding at Eastover has been released and it will be presented to the school board on Tuesday October 27th. The proposal recommends sending all of Myers Park that is currently zoned for Eastover to a new neighborhood school in Dilworth.
